Program to replace textbooks in K-12
A recent article reports that a proposal made in the State of Arizona would ban printed textbooks in favor of digital or e-learning materials (when available). By moving to digital curriculums and banning traditional textbooks, new monies might be made available for computers in schools (K-12). State Senator Barbara Leff noted that, "The modern world has moved beyond textbooks." Opponents to the bill noted the continued presence of a "digital divide" and concerns that lower income students, or poorer school districts would be disadvantaged in this shift. Many other states are also experimenting with digital initiatives in the K-12 space. I just thought this piece was an interesting example of the theme and some of the issues. It could have some interesting implications for higher education, and it is a program that could be interesting to watch.
